About Us
It takes a whole family...
Arctic Paws Kennel is a family run operation, which involves all of us, including our three daughters, Cassie, Aurora and Sedona. All of us participate in the care and upkeep of the kennel. We are also a working family and Rex's career in telecommunications, along with his 20 year military retirement largely support the kennel.
How it all began...
Arctic Paws Kennel was born in 1997 when Rex Jones retired from Alaska Fiberstar and was sponsored by them to fly over to Europe and purchase his first group of sprint hounds from Egil Ellis. At that time no one in Alaska was running hound/husky mixes and it was called a "fad." But Rex's obsession with the new ideal sled dog turned out to be a sure thing. Now, not even a decade later, these same bloodlines are being bred into all sled dog lines, including distance and itidarod teams.
More about Rex Jones and his Mentor Frank Hall
Who We Are...
While we maintain a full squadron of our own race dogs, Arctic Paws has been primarily committed to the sponsorship and support of junior mushing in Alaska. Because Rex's love for sled dogs began at just eight years old, thanks to his mentor, Frank Hall, Rex has a love for helping kids get the opportunity to run dogs. Many families can not afford to keep dogs or do not have the option of owning dogs. Our Junior Musher Sponsorship Program, funded largley by Rex's military retirement, has enabled many children to participate in our sponsored activities. Running dogs gives kids the opportunity to overcome a fear, become responsible for themselves and their dogs, and builds the self-confidence kids need to get through life. Arctic Paws Kennel offers several programs including mushing instruction for children and adults and team leases for recreation and races. Some of our other programs include work with the Make A Wish Foundation, rides for the CCS Head Start kids, our Junior Musher sponsorship program, demonstrations for schools and organizations, sled dog rides for groups, Summer Seminars on Sled Dog Sports and getting started in mushing, skijour, scootering, and biking with dogs, Sled Dog 101 for House Dogs, and leader training sessions.
